Cubs Next Manager is..... Kaplan and Stark talk Cubs...

- With the announcement of Lou leaving at the end of the season and Jim officially compiling his list of potential candidates, we are hearing more and more names come out and be dismissed. Here is the latest list-

To get an interview-(so far)
Ryne Sandberg
Fredi Gonzalez

Announced Interest-
Bob Brenly
Pat Listach
Ryne Sandberg
Fredi Gonzalez

Rumored Interest-
Bobby Valentine
Joe Torre
Joe Girardi

Dismissed Rumors?-
Tony LaRussa
Joe Girardi – Many say he will not leave but until he makes a statement or the Yanks extend him I will keep him in the rumored interest as well.

- Many teams are very interested in Ted Lilly. Rumor has it that Jim Hendry is trying to package Lilly with Theriot as well as other Cubs like Fukudome, Fontenot, and maybe even Derrek Lee.

- 6 teams are aggressively going after Lilly and Jayson Stark said the Cubs will not pay any of his salary and probably will not have to.

Here is an update from David Kaplan on 1460 KXNO-

- David Kaplan still thinks that Joe Girardi will be the Cubs next manager but if for some reason he is not he said no doubt the Cubs make Ryne Sandberg there next manager. Kaplan said that if Joe Girardi is manager next season, Ryne will be asked to be on his coaching staff.

- Kaplan says there is no way Joe Torre or Pat Listach is the Cubs next manager.

- David Kaplan said there is no doubt that Jim Hendry will be the GM next season.

- David Kaplan also says that executives around baseball view the Cubs minor league system as a top 5-10 in baseball as far as depth and general talent.

Lou Gone.. Who Next..

Lets look at the recent Cubs talk as Aram lights up Houston....

- Lou Pinella announced today that he will be retiring at the end of the season. He did a good job as the Cubs manager sending the Cubs to the playoffs two years in a row. He had nothing but nice things to say about the Cubs, Chicago, and the fans. I wish him nothing but the best and thank him for his efforts in the windy city.

- USATODAY runs down the list of possible replacements for Sweet Lou. I think Joe Girardi is a pipe dream but would be my first pick. After that I would love to see Ryne Sandberg or Bob Brenly get the nod. I am not a Joe Torre guy and if the Cubs get Tony LaRussa then he better bring in Dave Duncan! I still think a combo of Bob Brenly and Ryne Sandberg would be great. Make one a manager and the other the bench coach.

- Even though Lou is gone do not expect Jim Hendry to follow. There will likely be "no change" in the GM position for the Cubs.

- The Angels are reportedly interested in Alberto Callaspo but sources are telling me the Cubs are interested in Callaspo as well since he is a offensive upgrade over Theriot and Fontenot and will cost them less money in the long run. The Cubs could offer up Jeff Samardijza for him straight up but Jeff would have to waive his no-trade clause.

Lots of Lilly Suitors and other rumors....

- According to Jayson Stark of ESPN the Tigers have inquired on Ted Lilly. Although Rosenthal said they have not spoken in weeks. On a side note, anyone with ESPN will disagree with anyone at Foxsports and vice versa (stupid!).

- Bruce Levine says the Yankees, Tigers, Mets, Twins, and Dodgers have called Hendry about Ted Lilly. He also names the Red Sox and Rays as potential suitors but just to prevent the Yankees from getting him.

- Ryan Theriot said he has heard his name in trade rumors but does not want to be traded. While sources say that if Lilly goes to the Tigers, Theriot will go along for the ride.

- Carlos Zambrano is expected to pitch for the Iowa Cubs this week, likely on Weds or Thursday. There have been rumors circulating that the Yankees could trade Burnett for Zambrano because the money is about the same, but that may just be message board talk. I am still hearing rumors that the White Sox are interested especially with Peavy done for the year.

- The Rangers still really like Xavier Nady but prefer Lowell because he can play 3rd.

- The Cubs may go into next season with holes at 1st, 2nd, and 3rd (if Aram opts out) to fill. Tom Ricketts said in a nut shell he will not hand out large contracts (ie Zambrano, Soriano, etc) but spend wisely on free agents while developing the prospects. Here are some of the rumored candidates to fill those infield positions-

First Base-
Adam Dunn
Carlos Pena
Ty Wigginton

2nd Base-
Orlando Hudson
Felipe Lopez

3rd base-
Adrian Beltre- if option is not exercised
Jorge Cantu

The Cubs could also move some players around on the diamond. I have hear rumblings that the Cubs could move Geovany Soto from behind the plate to 1st or 3rd base. Which would also explain why the Cubs are interested in acquiring a top prospect catcher for Lilly. The Cubs could also move Tyler Colvin to 1st base as well. This goes to show you that the Cubs are thinking outside the box.

- Sources expect the Cubs manager Lou Pinella to retire at the end of the season. Those same sources say Ryne Sandberg will be the Chicago Cubs new manager. CubbieCrib has more on this.
